Monopoly Go features exciting minigames, events, and tournaments that break up the traditional board game flow and allow you to interact with other players. One fun minigame that many players look forward to is Shutdown. 

During a Shutdown, you have the chance to raid a friend’s or a random player’s city and demolish their Landmarks. Doing so lets you strategically disrupt their progress and win tons of cash prizes. While Monopoly Go randomly selects Shutdown opponents by default, it is possible to choose a specific target. This guide explains how Shutdowns work and how you can change your opponent.

The Shutdown minigame is triggered when your token lands on a Railroad tile. Once active, you’ll be transported to another player’s city to wreak havoc. Here, you can tap on any of their landmarks to destroy them.

Keep in mind that the other player isn't entirely defenseless. If they have a Shield equipped, it can block your attack, protect their landmarks, and reduce the rewards you get. The trick for a successful Shutdown is to damage the weakest landmarks, which can easily be identified by a cloud of smoke around them.

Dice multipliers affect the rewards you get from a Shutdown, so rolling with a higher multiplier can help you win more cash.

If you don’t want to attack a certain player, you can easily change your Shutdown opponent. Doing so also helps you scout better targets or even target the player who last raided you for revenge. To change your target, tap on the “Switch Opponent” button at the bottom of the Shutdown screen. Here, you can choose a different player to attack from the “Revenge” and “Friends” tabs.

In the “Revenge” tab, you’ll find the option to attack another random player or seek revenge for Shutdowns on your own landmarks. You can scroll down to find a list of your recent attacks and pick one for payback.

The “Friends” tab lets you visit any of your Monopoly Go friends’ cities and attack their buildings. While this sounds exciting, keep in mind that your friend will be notified of the damage and can get revenge in their next Shutdown.

To protect your landmarks against Shutdowns, make sure you’ve equipped enough Shields before quitting the game.
