What is a Promise Ring?
A promise ring is a ring given from one person to someone else in a romantic partnership to signify their fidelity and commitment. It is usually (but not always) prior to an engagement. Promise rings signify the commitment of a partner to the relationship and accepting it is the same for the person receiving it.
Can a promise ring be identical to a purity ring?
Sometimes sometimes, but not always. When Joe Jonas told Details in an interview in 2008, that he and his brothers' rings symbolized, "a promise to ourselves and to God to keep our purity until marriage,"" promise rings became synonymous with purity rings.

"The attraction of the promise ring comes due to the numerous interpretations it may have," says Kimberly Kanary, vice president of public relations and social media at Kay Jewelers. "Many couples present or wear promise rings solely to signal an engagement to come, whereas others use them more of a symbol of devotion to each other."
Brooke Brinkman explains that she was given a promise ring by her husband about a year and a half before the couple was engaged. In Brinkman’s case it was a sign that there was an engagement, but it's not always the case. Elizabeth Woolf Willis, GG AJP is the marketing coordinator of Simon G. Jewelry. She says that promise rings are similar to the mid-century practices of presenting an engraved class ring or pin to your high school love. "Now you're no longer just "dating"--you have a tangible sign of your commitment to display outside of your home."
The History of Promise Rings
Brinkman says that the idea of giving an engagement ring as an act of affection and love is over hundred years old. The custom of wearing rings as a symbol of loyalty and fidelity also dates to prehistoric times. There is evidence that suggests Roman brides wore engagement rings from the 2nd century BC. Rings with romantic engravings poetry date back to the 16th century in England. Acrostic rings - which spell out a word using gemstones - were popular in the Georgian and Victorian times. A ruby that has emeralds, amethysts, garnets and diamonds spells "regard", while a diamond, sapphire, topaz, emeralds, amethysts diamonds, rubies and emeralds spells out "dearest".
Modern promise rings are a fairly new fashion, and have been embraced by celebrities such as the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth.
For the different types of rings for promise it is possible to use any type of promise ring. Really, there aren't regulations or guidelines here. There are numerous popular promise rings. They are Claddagh rings, eternity rings, Claddagh rings that feature an infinity symbol or designs that connect to represent the bond of a couple. They also come in a range of themes and styles, such as hearts, an infinity symbol or intertwined patterns. It is also simple rings made of sterling silver or even gold with an engraved message. Diamond promise rings are popular, too, although they typically come in a small carat size and arranged in a cluster or row versus the standard solitaire diamond engagement ring.
